What is this?

A safeword is a pre-agreed signal that overrides the scene. Traffic lights work well: Red = full stop, Yellow = slow down or change, Green = all good. Non-verbal backups matter if someone cannot speak clearly.

Traffic light (recommended)

Can we just use “stop”?

You can, if both treat it as absolute. Many couples prefer a unique word because “stop” can appear inside play dialogue.
